Visual art for me is more of a place than a thing to look at. My own art is a place where I would want to go; full of colours, amusing events, interesting ideas and stories. It’s not a serious place, but a place where we learn through play, feel alive through colour and hopefully come away feeling a little more light-hearted than we did before. Laurel Martin
Laurel Martin is primarily a landscape painter whose work is focused on exploring colour to tell stories, create atmosphere and convey feeling. As a child, her parents travelled extensively and she was taken to many galleries where the art she saw was to have a huge impact. The impressionists were her mother’s favourite and today Laurel considers herself an impressionist, no doubt influenced by her childhood memories. After studying Fine Art and English at the University of Toronto she took countless classes and workshops with many esteemed artists such as Judith Livingston, Sarka Buchl Stevenson and Andrew Hamilton. She has worked in watercolour, mixed media and acrylic and printmaking, particularly linocut and collagraphy. Today, she works in oil, both in the studio and on location or en plein air. She has shown her art at many galleries across Canada and been published in magazines like Cloth, Paper Scissors and Somerset Studios. Her art serves as a gentle reminder to slow down, to immerse ourselves in the natural world, and to find solace and inspiration in the beauty that surrounds us.
