Artist Alley

Folding chairs do not make for flattering pictures
Here I am at the second Artist Alley of 2010.  It was a beautiful day and if you've ever sold things outside, you'll know this is hugely important.  I think it was the only day this summer without humidity.  The bad news was that there was an Art in the Park event in another part of town so no doubt a lot of the art loving public went there.

There is a golden reindeer on the table behind my booth!
I set up my booth differently this time and I think it worked well.  At the last event I had my table in front, with me sitting at it and my art behind me.  I think people were afraid to go by me and look at the art.  I'm sooo scary.   Actually I can understand that if you are looking at art, you may not want to have to confront the artist.  You may hate their art and not want to have to talk to them.  So this time I sat in the corner and painted.  People didn't feel they had to talk to me and I did get a lot more traffic.  People also watched me paint which was a little unnerving but we were supposed to do demonstrations so I guess that fit the bill.

See the face on the painting in the next booth!
Sales were not great for anyone at the show but I did sell enough pony pendants to cover my costs.  Ingrid Schmelter has a great blog post about her experience at a show and her quote of the day was "If you can't wear it, or eat it, you can't sell it."  That certainly held true for me.  Hopefully next time, when there isn't another art event going on at the same time, we'll have better luck!  However, I must say that the experience gained at this low key event was priceless.

Really nice set-up. Glad to know I'm not the only 'scary' artist. Getting out of way leaves viewers a private space. I bet people LOVED watching you sketch. Um, and thanks for the mention *blushing*

You were very brave to do this. I've never had a booth by myself. It looks very good and welcoming. (I agree about the folding chairs.)
