I drew this picture for Illustration Friday and I didn't realize at the time how closely it relates to what I've been up to lately. I moved my studio from upstairs to the basement and for some reason, I felt I should re-do the stairs and hallways on the way down. The carpet on the stairs was old and stained so before I could stop myself, I started pulling it off. Re-finishing the stairs turned out to be a lot of work. That's one of the reasons I haven't been blogging lately. Above the stairs is a wonderful window with a view down the street. I wanted to paint the walls, but it was so high up and I'm afraid of heights! You have no idea how many times I tried to get up this ladder. I finally succeeded. This must have been the inspiration for my Illustration Friday. In my subconscious, this ladder looks more like the one in my illustration! I still couldn't reach everywhere, but humans are tool makers, right? Leaning off to the side of the ladder was not something I wanted to do so the paint brush taped to the stir stick did the trick. Finally the stairs and hall where done and I was able to carry all my supplies down to the basement without looking at the yucky carpet. There is still yucky carpet upstairs, but I'll leave that to the professionals. Finally, down in my newly painted basement studio, I was able to do the journal page for the word "heights". I can tell by this dark photo that I need more light. Perhaps a grow light would help. I don't want to feel the need to climb out of the basement. I've had enough moving around for now!

Lovely illustration! Either she has a mysterious hiding place, or she's climbing out of the real world into some kind of wonderful fantasy place.

I love your page, Laurel! I freak out when I'm high up, too. Your new studio space looks great. Power to you for tackling the stairs and making your new area more inviting. :-) I think Cindy's lamp suggestion is a very good one. Happy new studio space!! <3

Love how this is almost segmented. Great use of color & textures! The studio looks GREAT! I can see how it would be easy to create in such an environment!
